State Energy Office
The Washington State Energy Office, housed at the Department of Commerce, provides leadership, information, analysis and support for energy decisions that deliver a sound energy future to the state of Washington and its citizens. The State Energy Office has been a national leader on energy policy and technical assistance since it was established in the 1970’s.
The State Energy Office played a major role in transforming building practices by helping Washington State adopt an energy code in the 1980’s and helping create the energy efficiency industry in the Northwest. The State Energy Office is currently leading proactive efforts to address market barriers to renewables, a smarter grid, electric vehicles and distributed energy. As host of the annual Washington Future Energy Conference, the State Energy Office convenes hundreds of government, business, and non-profit representatives to tackle the state’s most pressing issues of energy and business.
Over the past few years, the State Energy Office has expanded to administer grants and loans offered under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act totaling $60 million. Supported by a Department of Energy Sunshot grant, the WA State Energy Office is the fiscal sponsor of the Northwest Solar Communities effort.
