Solarize Mercer Island is off to a great start!

Since the Solarize campaign began just under a month ago, Mercer Island has scheduled over 40 free site assessments and has plans to install 5 new solar systems which will total over 35 kilowatts of clean, solar energy.

The recent boom in solar activity was sparked just a few weeks ago at the first Solarize workshop on June 3rd, where forty-five of the nearly 65 attendees signed up for the first phase – a free roof assessment. With an upcoming workshop scheduled for July 8th at the Community Center, Mercer Island hopes to carry this momentum forward.

The goal is to install a minimum of 30 new systems. Working in partnership with Northwest SEED – a local community renewable energy non-profit which has successfully managed several Seattle area Solarize campaigns – Mercer Island has every reason to be optimistic.

The success of the Solarize campaign lies in its innovative combination of incentives and financing.

It allows home owners to purchase their solar installation at a bulk, group rate, which significantly reduces upfront costs. In combination with Puget Sound Energy’s net-metering plan, home owners can bank their excess energy on the grid and offset their monthly energy bill.

Taken together, an installation purchased under the Solarize program will gradually pay for itself, after which point the home owner will continue to benefit from clean, solar energy production for the life of the installation.
